#6 – Fighting

Posted on Updated on

Every breath was defiance: every kick was flung against a fate that was as cruel and cold as the depths below.  Amid the mountainous swells, crashing and flailing as spray stung his cheeks, the last of the Derby PALS rolled and twisted in the grey dawn.  A thousand miles away his love was waiting; a thousand miles away, a father would be welcomed home.  A new day was dawning on the surging mid-Atlantic, the Laconia now settling to her bed and sleeping far below.  A wedding was expected back in England: a searchlight was gleaming on the horizon.

#5 – Paid

Posted on Updated on

The Dark Haired Man’s eyes gleamed as silver coins tumbled against his palm.  He knew the amount and he knew not to check it: The Egyptian always paid in full.  Cigar smoke twisted against the ceiling, a dust-laden fan cutting each wisp into the close, rancid air.  He watched it spin to nothing, looking through the fug at a future full of golden sands and endless moonlit nights.  Sparks flared against glass as the Dark Haired Man stubbed the cigar out and gazed down at The Egyptian’s lifeless body.  “Always nice doing business with you.”

“Oranges and Lemons, 60p a Pound!  Get yer caulis, get yer carrots, get yer five a day wrapped up and ready!  Special closing down prices!  Last day, last chance!  Come and get yer spuds, yer kale, yer broken dreams and bitter regrets.  Don’t miss out: half price on unfamiliar cologne and hurried phone calls.  Avocado at special prices!  Strawberries fresh from the field.  Get them while they’re fresh, get them while they’re raw, get them while tucking your daughter in, all alone for the sixth night in a row. #3 – All

I watch as the tube turns red, my blood flowing through, barely feeling the pinching sting of the dirty surgical wound.  I breathe easy – a silky calm sinking into my chest, my spirit rising and drifting through the cloying, frigid void.  There is my body, spread, fading, broken but content beneath me.  My love is at my side, the tube in her arm.  As the red of my blood sinks through her skin, her eyes flutter open. We gaze at each other and she nods a sad smile.  Soon she will be magnificent.

#2 – English

I say sorry a lot.  Perhaps it comes from my grandmother or perhaps from my breeding.  I’ve always been the self-effacing gentleman; the softly spoken, apologetic alien.  But it isn’t true.  Its a lie I tell myself as I beg to sleep.  Sorry is her eyes as they sink into the water on a sunny spring day.  They plead when I dress, when I shave, when I drive, when I live my hollow, polite, timid, sour pretend life.  I only say sorry because I am.

#1 – Door

His heart racing, Philip pressed his ear against the wood.  The sob came again: aching and abandoned.  In the dark of the alleyway Philip trembled, his blood pulsing in his ears as a man with the crowbar looked on.  “Move along, there’s nothing to see.”  Still the blood pumped loud, Philip’s heart thundering.  Another sob whispered at the wood, a scream following, trapped within. “I said move along.”  There was a slap of metal against flesh.  Philip’s tear-stained eyes closed tight, his warrant card clattering to the floor.  Slowly, he turned and stepped away.

Introducing One Word One Story

Posted on Updated on

I’m sure most of you reading this have come across “Word Association”.  Usually used by psychiatrists, it’s the technique where you say a word and the other person says the first word that springs to mind.

For me, it’s images.  I see a word and an image forms – it’s one of the reasons that I enjoy writing so much.

So what would happen if I took those images and wrote the first story that springs to mind based on that image?  Well, that’s the challenge I’m setting myself with this blog.

One Word: One Story,… every day for the next 365 days of 2016/17.

Yes, I’m a bit crazy.  But let’s see what shakes loose!

The rules:

Just one word each day: picked at random or donated via Twitter or Facebook.

No thinking: write the story as it happens.  Leave it.  Return to it and edit it a little a few hours later without changing the core of the tale.

100 words:  That’s all I have to tell each story – a maximum word count of 100 words.  I can make it shorter but not longer.

The first story will appear above Tomorrow at 3pm and every day at 3pm every day at 7.30am GMT from then on out.  Send me any words you want me to write about – I’ll be compiling a list of “Used” words on another tab.

Subscribe to the blog (It’s the “Follow” button that’s floating to the bottom right of your screen) and get notified of every story!  It only takes a second.  Hit that button and start reading as I start writing.
